Teaching and Learning

Tools like Google Earth, Google Maps, ArcGIS, and a host of web-based map viewers not only allow for compelling presentations of spatial data, but can give your students an opportunity to practice critical thinking in an interactive digital environment by:

  • developing research questions & refining research methods
  • querying data and interpreting results
  • presenting data-based evidence effectively in visual media
  • connecting spatial knowledge with other forms of inquiry and scholarship

In addition, mobile mapping tools such as hand-held GPS, tablet PCs, and consumer products such as cameras and cell phones offer unique opportunities for students to gather original data, go beyond the classroom, and use technology to question assumptions and to investigate their environment.

Available to you:

  • Consultation on your project/assignment/course idea
  • Help with finding and preparing data for spatial inquiry
  • Introductory training for ArcGIS, Google Earth, and other mapping tools
  • Access to further training opportunities through ESRI, NITLE, and more.
  • Instructional design and classroom implementation support for your module, including classroom instruction and one-on-one help for your students

To start learning, using, and teaching with GIS or other mapping tools, make an appointment with Jeremy Donald, faculty technology liaison.

Please send any comments or suggestions about this page to Jeremy Donald, library liaison for Geographic Information Systems.
