Your Questions About...Movies and Music in the Library How does the library decide which movies and music compact discs will be added to the collection? Our philosophy about buying music and movies is the same that we use when buying books. We select titles that will support the curriculum at Trinity. We also try to add items that enhance our current offerings. For example, we are currently adding films to the collection that were selected by the Library of Congress as “American Treasures” of film. If you would ever like to request a purchase, please do so! Just email asklib@trinity.edu. How can I find out about the new media items in the library? Each month, the library’s film liaison sends out an email that lists the prior month’s new film releases in the library. If you would like to receive this list each month, send your request to Benjamin.Harris@trinity.edu. To search for movies, use the library’s catalog just as you would when searching for a book. To limit your search to a specific film or music recording, use the “Quick Limit” feature on the Simple Search screen to retrieve results that include videorecordings or musical recordings. For help with using the catalog when searching for books, music, movies, and more, visit the library’s Help Desk in the Information Commons..
What’s the deal with videotapes and laserdiscs? No matter how hard I shove, they won’t play on my laptop. Ok first---STOP doing that. Believe it or not, many films are not yet available on DVD, so we keep these items in various formats. In addition, some of the laserdiscs in our collection contain additional items or information that may not be available on the DVD version. So what about those films that we only have on videotape you know they are now available on DVD? We’ve recently started a project to add the DVD copies of these films to our collection. It is expected to take several years to complete this project. If you must see a film that is only available on videotape, or if you wish to play one of the long playing records available in the music collection, we will continue to maintain equipment in the library to play these formats..
