Library Wireless FAQ
1. Where can I check out a
library laptop?
At the Circulation Desk on
the third (main) floor.
2. Can I print from the
laptop?
Yes. Printing will default to
the LIBR-REF2 printer on the 3rd (Main) floor of the library.
You will need to use your Tiger Card to release your print jobs.
3. How long can I keep the
laptop?
The circulation period is two
hours.
4. Can I use it anywhere in
the building?
Yes, the laptops have
batteries and do not require you to connect to a power source. However, if you
prefer to connect to power, there are outlets near seating areas throughout
Coates Library.
5. Can I take a laptop out
of the library?
No, laptops are for in-house
use only. This will be enforced strictly.
6. What happens if the
laptop breaks or is stolen while I have it checked out?
You’ll need to inform the
staff at the Circulation Desk as soon as possible. We’ll work with ITS staff to
assess the damage in that case. You will sign an acknowledgement form
accepting responsibility for the laptop and peripherals when you check it out.
You will be able to secure the computer to a table or desk if you move away
from it. You will be responsible for the laptop while it is in your
possession.
7. Can I bring in my own
laptop and use it on the wireless network?
To use your own laptop on the
wireless network, you will need a special PCMCIA card that supports LEAP
authentication.
For an updated list
of wireless cards that will work with our network, see the
ITS Wireless Technology
page.
8. I have an i-Mac. Can I
use it on the wireless network?
Please see the Cisco web site
for more information at
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/102/wlan/mac-clients-faq.html for LEAP support.
9. I am a faculty member and
use a wireless network at home. Can I bring in my laptop as is and use it here?
Possibly. Most home wireless
networks are insecure, and do not use the Cisco LEAP authentication for
access. You may need to acquire a LEAP-compatible card. Even then, you will
need to configure your computer for this network.
10. I don’t know how to
configure my own laptop as you say. Who can help me?
Consult the
ITS Wireless Technology page for online support. If you'd like
individual help, stop by the Help Desk in the Coates Library and ask for ITS
assistance.
