Evaluating Lesson Plans / Standards

Listed below are some useful starting points for those looking for information about curriculum resources, lesson plans, and educational standards. Suggestions for additions may be sent to Benjamin Harris, the library's liaison for Education.

Core Knowledge -- Schools
The core knowledge movement advocates a precise sequence of education plans and activities that leads students through their K-12 years.  Lesson plans are located under the "Resources" link.

DiscoverySchool
Sponsored by the Discovery Network of channels, this site features over 500 lesson plans organized by subject and grade level.

Educator's Reference Desk: Lesson Plans
A product of the Information Institute at Syracuse University, the site includes lesson plans, a question/answer archive, and links to over 3000 sites categorized by topic.  The lesson plans on this site include those formerly located at Askeric.org.

GEM: Gateway to Educational Materials
"The Gateway to Educational Materials is a consortium effort to provide educators with quick and easy access to thousands of educational resources found on various federal, state, university, non-profit, and commercial Internet sites."  The lesson spotlight on the homepage focuses on resources with a topical or timely interest.  The browsing option makes locating plans efficient, although some of the categories are broad and rather large.

Graphic Organizer
"Graphic Organizers, Mind Maps, Concept Maps are a pictoral or graphical way to organize information and thoughts for understanding, remembering, or writing about." These can be "powerful tools that can be used to enchance learning and create a foundation for learning."  Check out the "Indexes" and "References" link at the top of the screen for other helpful pages.

Learning Page
This lesson plan archive includes a variety of strategies for teaching a single topic.

Lesson Plans and Authentic Assessments
From the Teaching With Technology Initiative in North Dakota, this site includes links to other resources that focus on "authentic assessment."

Lesson Plans Page
Site indexes over 2000 free lesson plans for teachers (K-12).

MARCOPOLO
One of the largest curriculum resources online, Marcopolo is known for the fact that all of the items here have been reviewed for content and organized by grade level.

Merlot
Like MARCOPOLO, Merlot's site includes peer reviewed learning materials organized by topic.  The site also offers a place for professionals to communicate with one another.

MiddleWeb
Subtitled "Exploring Middle School Reform," this site doesn't include an official lesson plan section or link, but lesson plans are included.  Try using the "Resources" link to find lesson plans or the Google search box on the homepage.

New York Times & Learning Network
"Archive contains hundreds of free lesson plans for grades 6-12. You may perform a keyword search to retrieve a lesson, browse the archive by subject, or scroll down the page to view the most recently published lessons."

PBS Teacher Source
Includes lesson plans for a variety of subjects and age groups in a searchable format, and may include state curriculum objectives for some plans.

ReadWriteThink: Lesson Plans
Includes annotations and full-text for lesson plans (sorted by date, topic, or grade/age group).  Sponsored by the International Reading Association, the National Council for Teachers of English, and marcopolo.

Region 15 Curriculum: Graphic Organizers
Region 15 (Connecticut) offers these downloadable examples of "three-dimensional learning experiences."  Go here for art and music curricula, or here for the Region 15 homepage.

Rubistar
"RubiStar is a free tool to help a teacher make quality rubrics. RubiStar is a tool to help the teacher who wants to use rubrics but does not have the time to develop them from scratch."

Rubrics for Web Lessons
Online web lesson for teachers related to creating rubrics and authentic assessment.

Scholastic: Teachers
While the site can be difficult to navigate, the Scholastic.com site features two areas that feature curriculum ideas and plans. First, the "Teaching Ideas for Your Grade" page offers an extended narrative on a particular unit, including images.  The "Lesson Plans" tab directs the searcher toward archives of lesson plans. Searchers may see the newest plans updated, and also browse plans by category and grade level.

Teachers.net
Website includes lesson plans on all topics for all grades.  Users can search for plans or browse the available resources. Categories are more extensive than on some lesson plan sites.

TCET Texas-Made Lesson Plans
From the Technology Applications Center for Educator Development, this page includes lesson plans created by Texas teachers that integrate curricular topics with technology.

TSHA Online: Teaching Tools
A number of lesson plans geared toward the TEKS curriculum are provided by the Texas State Historical Association.  Grades 4 and 7 only.

UBD Exchange (Understanding By Design)
This site includes links to content standards, understandings or "big ideas" in a variety of subject areas, performance assessment ideas and initiatives, and rubrics as well as lesson plans.  Site requires login.
 

English and Languages

Clearinghouse on Reading, English, and Communication
Includes lesson plans for varying age ranges on the topic of focus.  Formerly an ERIC repository, the site is sponsored by the Indiana University School of Education.

EDSITEment: Foreign Language Lesson Plans
This site (sponsored by the NEH and marcopolo) also includes lesson plans in other topical areas.

Language Wrangler
Innovative and creative would characterize the selection of lesson plans on this site.  Organization is limited but searchers can use a search box on the homepage.

Poetry Express
This site includes activities designed to help visitors write, revise, and present their poems.

Outreach World
Site offers resources, lesson plans, publication information, conference information, and more for teachers of international and area studies as well as foreign language classes.

Realia Project
"The REALIA Project publishes faculty-reviewed media for the teaching and study of modern languages and cultures. Faculty and students at all levels are encouraged to contribute materials to our searchable, online database. The focus of the REALIA Project is realia: Materials which convey the everyday life of different cultures."  Trinity University was involved in the continuing development of this project through the Associated Colleges of the South.
 

Reading

Children's Literature Webguide
Compilation of  links to resources related to literature for children and young adults. The "Resources for Teachers" link leads to outside pages that include lesson plans on these topics.

Kay Vandergrift's Children's & Young Adult Literature Website: Special Interest Page
Vandergrift's site reads like an online book, covering many issues and topics related to children's and young adult literature.  Links lead to educational and professional development resources.

Think quest
Site features education resources "by students for students."  Note that in May 2005, sites such as the lesson plan site for reading topics have been closed for maintenance.
 

Science and Math

Cornell University: Math and Science Gateway
"This Gateway provides links to resources in mathematics and science for educators and students in grades 9-12, although teachers of other levels may find these materials helpful. The Math & Science Gateway has won numerous awards and hopes to increase our success with input from internet community."

ENC Online: Eisenhower National Clearinghouse for Mathematics and Science Education
Established in 1992 with funding from the U.S. Department of Education, the mission of the clearinghouse is to "acquire and catalog mathematics and science curriculum resources, creating the most comprehensive collection in the nation; provide the best selection of math and science education resources on the Internet; support teachers' professional development in math, science, and the effective use of technology; serve all K-12 educators, parents, and students with free products and services."

Franklin Institute's Center for Innovation in Science Learning: Action Guides
Click on the action guide links for lesson and project plans related to a number of science related topics.  Other non-scientific topics are included here along with innovative curriculum designs.  For the site's home page, click here.

Illuminations: National Council for Teachers of Mathematics
The "Lessons" section includes full-text lesson plans for projects and class assignments. 

Insectclopedia
Page includes an archive of lesson plans focusing on insects as subject matter and are organized by grade level.  The sponsoring site, PedagoNet, includes other lesson plan subject areas (of limited comprehensiveness and quality).

Math Forum
Sponsored by Drexel University, site includes problems and math related puzzles as well as a lesson plan exchange under the "Resources and Tools" tab. 

NASA's Ames Research Center
Site includes resources for educators related to air and space transportation topics.  Use the search function to locate plans, or check out recent additions in the "Features" section of the homepage.

NOAA Resources
Teaching resources from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

PALS (Performance Assessment Links in Science)
PALS is an on-line, standards-based, continually updated resource bank of science performance assessment tasks indexed via the National Science Education Standards (NSES) and various other standards frameworks.

PUMAS: Practical Uses of Math and Science
From the site: "a collection of one-page examples of how math and science topics taught in K-12 classes can be used in interesting settings, including everyday life. The examples are written primarily by scientists and engineers, and are available to teachers, students, and other interested parties via the PUMAS Web Site."

Science Gems
Resources at this site are organized into categories and are searchable from the home page.  Site has been maintained since 1994 by Physicist Frank Potter.

Science NetLinks
Lesson plan topics cover a range of scientific topics and areas of inquiry.  This index features title and topical information.

Sequenced Lesson Plans: Mathematics
Sponsored by and conforming to objectives for the Georgia Department of Education, these sequenced plans offer instruction guidelines in 30 day increments. 

SMILE: Science and Mathematics Initiative for Learning Enhancement
"The SMILE program is designed to enhance the elementary and high school learning of Science and Mathematics through the use of the phenomenological approach."  The left-hand toolbar includes lesson plan indexes by subject.

Teacher-Developed Earth and Space Science Lesson Plans
This small collection of lesson plans is sponsored by UC-Berkeley and also includes a design template that can be used to create similar lessons.

USGS: Learning Web
Sponsored by the U.S. Geological Survey, this site includes a teaching section that includes lesson plans and project descriptions related to geology education.

Volcano World
The topic of this site should be pretty obvious.  Researchers may find education resources under the "Teaching and Learning" link.
 

Social Studies

History Channel: Classroom
A number of educational resources are provided, including lesson plans in the "Ideas from our Teachers" collection.

Learning Page (from the Library of Congress)
This site acts as a companion to the LOC's "American Memory" collections.  Here you will find lesson plans, professional development opportunities, as well as other features.

Lesson Plans and Resources for Social Studies Teachers
From a professor emeritus at California State University, Northridge, comes this site including links to resources for Social Studies lesson plans.  The site has not been updated since 2002.  Expect broken web links and some misdirected links---but it is worth it considering the host of helpful resources.

National Archives: Educators and Students Page
Sponsored by the U.S. National Archives, this page offers curriculum resources and suggestions for teachers focusing on American History and historical documents.

National Geographic Xpeditions
Lesson plans and activities related to geography.

Teaching with Historic Places
"Teaching with Historic Places (TwHP) uses properties listed in the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places to enliven history, social studies, geography, civics, and other subjects."

Texas Education Agency: Social Studies Center
TEA page focusing on resources and news related to the teaching of social studies topics.
 

Miscellaneous Subjects

ArtsEdge from The Kennedy Center
Sponsored by The Kennedy Center of the Performing Arts, this project "supports the placement of the arts at the center of the curriculum and advocates creative use of technology to enhance the K-12 educational experience. ArtsEdge empowers educators to teach in, through, and about the arts by providing the tools to develop interdisciplinary curricula that fully integrate the arts with other academic subjects."

Crayola Creativity Central: Lesson Plans
Sponsored by the crayon manufacturer, these lesson plans each include a component that would encourage the use of Crayola products (or similar derivations). 

Kodak Lesson Plans
Lesson plans include components that require the use of photographs and/or photographic equipment.  The "More Plans" link at the bottom of the page directs searchers to "how to" guides for producing images.

Microsoft: Education
These lesson plans provided by Microsoft meet specific learning objectives while also encouraging development of technology related skills.  Lessons could be easily adapted to use other brands of software or different educational materials.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum: Lesson Plans
Site of the Hall of Fame and Museum includes lesson plans designed by teachers during the institution's Summer Teacher Institute.  Some of the plans focus on integrating music with traditional classroom subjects.  Others focus on specific figures from American music history and integrate their work or performances with other topics. 

Teacher Tap
This site offers free resources for creating "technology rich classrooms."  Site includes assignment suggestions as well as more complete curriculum plans.  Sponsored by the University of Toledo.
