Deafness/Hearing Impairment Resources
CENTe-R:
Collaborative Early Intervention National Training e-Source
Sponsored by the Department of Special Education Services in the School of
Education at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, CENTe-R's mission
is "to inform and support graduate-level professionals serving families with
infants and toddlers who are deaf/hard of hearing through web-based training
that embraces trans-disciplinary approaches and connections among ongoing
learners." Of particular interest are the "Selected Resources" and
"Annotated Bibliography" available through the "Resources" link.
DeafEd
This site is the result of two grants from the U.S. Department of Education.
It features the "DeafWeb" search engine, allowing users to focus their
internet searching, and also includes career, job, and organizational
information for current and future teachers.
Deaf Resource Library
Karen Nakamura of Macalester College in Minnesota has maintained this site
since 1995. Of particular interest are bibliographies and links related to
research and issues in deafness/hearing impairment in Japanese culture.
Flinders University Library Deafness and Hearing Impairments Resource Guide
Guide covers a range of international resources, specializing in Australian
resources on deafness and hearing impairment.
Laurent Clerc
National Deaf Education Center
Gallaudet University sponsors the center and this site, which offers a variety
of resources (from research to model instruction programs to University news).
The "Information About Deafness" link will be most useful for non-Gallaudet
patrons.
NAD:
National Association of the Deaf
The organization's recently redesigned (2004) site is a good starting point
for finding information on NAD, but less helpful on finding a wider variety of
information on topics in deafness and hearing impairment. The site offers
quick access to a few basic resources like the Deaf Child's Bill of Rights and
white papers on topics of interest to members.
NIDCD:
National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders
"Established in 1988, NIDCD is mandated to conduct and support biomedical and
behavioral research and research training in the normal and disordered
processes of hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech, and language."
Note the "Health Resources" link for educators, as well as grant application
procedures.
Texas
Speech-Language-Hearing Association
Featuring a solid listing of links organized into categories, this site offers
helpful resources. Note that the lack of recent maintenance will lead to some
broken links.

Children
While focusing on the larger topic of special education, the Council's site
is a solid resource for information on inclusive education.
MedlinePlus: Vision Impairment and Blindness
Medline's pages offer information and resource lists in a wide number of
categories, covering scientific and medical research related to eye health
and extending to coping mechanisms for patients and family members. Strong
categories of resources include the following: Research, Directories, Law &
Policy, Children, and Teenagers.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health, this site focuses on the
activities and research interests of the Institute. Sections devoted to
education programs and eye health resources are particularly valuable.
National Library Service from
the Library of Congress
"Through a national network of cooperating libraries, NLS administers
a free library program of Braille and audio materials circulated to eligible
borrowers in the United States by postage-free mail." This site details
their projects and services.
Teaching Children with Sensory Impairments: Strategies for Mainstream
Teachers
This project is the result of an international, collaborative effort among
educators in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand, who work with
students with vision or hearing impairments. The mission of the editors "is
to provide a resource for professionals, parents, and university students
involved in fully including students with sensory impairments in our
educational systems." Faculty emeritus Karen Waldron was one of the
editors of this project and many of the resources were created by Trinity
students.
Texas Department of
Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS)
The Texas Commission for the Blind has been absorbed into this 4 component
Department. Information related to the blind and vision impaired can be
found by following the Division for Blind Services link.
Circle of
Inclusion
"The Circle of Inclusion Web Site is for early childhood service providers
and families of young children. This web site offers demonstrations of and
information about the effective practices of inclusive educational programs
for children from birth through age eight."
Journal of Special
Education Technology (JSET)
"JSET is a refereed professional journal that presents up-to-date
information and
opinions about issues, research, policy, and practice related to the use of
technology in the field of special education."
NCIP: National Center to
Improve Practice in Special Education through Technology, Media, and Materials
While lacking recent maintenance, this site includes articles (in HTML and
PDF formats) on a variety of strategies and rationales related to using
technology to improve special education programs. Many of these resources are
designed to cross differing abilities and are appropriate for discussions and
projects related to inclusive education.
National
Institute for Urban School Improvement
Site features information about the organization, which focuses on
inclusive education for students with different abilities, ethnicities,
languages, etc. Of particular interest in the the Library link that
leads to a database of materials available in print and online on various
topics related to inclusive education.
