Art and Art History Internet Sources

The following internet resources offer images, articles, and other digital documents of interest to students in Art and Art History. Information located on the web should be evaluated before use.  If you have questions or difficulty locating information, please ask for assistance at the Help Desk or contact Benjamin Harris, library liaison for the Department of Art and Art History.
 

Archives of American Art (Smithsonian)
"Spanning the centuries since the founding of America to the present day, the collections of the Archives of American Art comprise the largest source in the world of primary source documentation on the visual arts in America. Contained in the over five thousand collections are letters, diaries, sketches and sketchbooks, photographs, exhibition catalogs, scrapbooks, business records, art periodicals, and other types of documents, totaling roughly fourteen million items. The collections, combined with approximately three thousand interviews done for AAA's oral history program, and nearly one thousand photographs in AAA's Photographs of Artists Collections, are an endless treasure trove of raw material for art historians and scholars in other fields to explore."

Art Cyclopedia
Noting that its "mission is to become the definitive and most effective guide to museum-quality fine art on the internet," Artcyclopedia claims to be definitive: "We have compiled a comprehensive index of every artist represented at hundreds of museum sites, image archives, and other online resources. We have all started out by covering the biggest and best sites around and have links for most well-known artists to keep you surfing for hours....We have now indexed 1200 art sites, and offer more than 32,000 links to an estimated 100,000 works by 7,500 renowned artists." A number of artists and movements covered include multimedia presentations.

Art Source
A gathering point for networked resources on art and architecture.  It is both selective and well-organized.  It includes both pointers and original documents.

Artists' Book Collection
"This database is an illustrated, descriptive index to the Artists’ Book Collection, located in the Kohler Art Library, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Presently, the Artists’ Book Collection contains over 800 titles. The database indexes approximately 760 of those titles, over 500 of which have one to four images to visually represent the structure and/or content of the book."

ArtServe at the Australian National University
This resources includes images (mostly contemporary photographs) of art and architecture from the Mediterranean Basin, Japan, India, and Cambodia.

Ceramics: accessCeramics
"accessCeramics is a growing collection of images of contemporary ceramics by recognized artists. It is designed for use by artists, arts educators, scholars and the general public, and is intended to fill a void in contemporary ceramics digital image collections on the web."

College Art Association
"CAA includes among its members those who by vocation or avocation are concerned about and/or committed to the practice of art, teaching, and research of and about the visual arts and humanities. Over 13,000 artists, art historians, scholars, curators, collectors, educators, art publishers, and other visual arts professionals are individual members. Another 2,000 university art and art history departments, museums, libraries, and professional and commercial organizations hold institutional memberships."

Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum : An Illustrated Catalogue of more than 100,000 Ancient Vases
The Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum provides access to a collection of images of primarily Greek ancient vases dating from 6,000 B.C. to 400 A.D. from more than 120 collections in 26 countries. This searchable database of digitized text and images, is browsable by country and museum, and searchable by fabric, technique, provenance and other aspects.

Digital Library for Decorative and Visual Arts
Sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, this site includes documents, images, and other resources to help support the material culture program at UWM. The "Resources" section includes very helpful links to associations, museums, and programs related to studies in the decorative and visual arts. 

Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, The
The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation was established in 1940 as the repository of the life work of Frank Lloyd Wright. The Foundation maintains its international headquarters at Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation is committed to advancing the ideas and principles of organic architecture, organic education, and conservation of the natural environment..."  Research section includes links to information from the William Wesley Peters Library, the official depository for the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture; information about the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives; and a select bibliography.

Library of Congress: American Memory
The LOC's American Memory database includes images and texts on many aspects of United States history, culture, and society.  Visitors new to the database may browse by topic, time period, geographic location, or type of material.

Musée Achéménide
Drawing on the expertise of a number of well-regarded institutions, the online Musée Achéménide brings users into the world of the ancient worlds of Persia, Babylonia, and the Egyptian empire. In the Consultation section, visitors can browse around through various collections, such as archival drawings and renderings from the various geographic areas covered here. They can also view objects from the ancient world and learn about their historical and cultural importance. Visitors can also move through the sections to create their own archive, which they can share with friends or colleagues.

NYPL Digital Gallery
"NYPL Digital Gallery provides access to over 275,000 images digitized from primary sources and printed rarities in the collections of The New York Public Library, including illuminated manuscripts, historical maps, vintage posters, rare prints and photographs, illustrated books, printed ephemera, and more."+

PHOTOMUSE
This database includes images from both the International Center for Photography and the George Eastman House.  Visitors can view the collected images by searching or browsing collections and exhibits.

Pigments Through the Ages
This web exhibit includes historical and factual information about the development of pigments.  Individual pages for specific colors are included, along with images, recipes, and more detailed information about the development of specific pigments.

Stoa Image Gallery
This is a dedicated image-server maintained by the Stoa Consortium for the use of scholars who would like to share, on an Open Access basis, their digital photographs and digital videos related to Classics, Classical Archaeology, and the classical tradition.

Timeline of Art History (Metropolitan Museum of Art)
The Timeline of Art History is a chronological, geographical, and thematic exploration of the history of art from around the world, as illustrated especially by the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection...The basic structure of the Timeline of Art History is both chronological and geographical. Each timeline page includes representative art from the Museum's collection, a chart of time periods, a map of the region, an overview, and a list of key events. The timelines-accompanied by world, and regional maps-provide a linear outline of art history, and allow visitors to compare and contrast art from around the globe at any time in history.

Van Gogh’s Letters: Unabridged and Annotated
A detailed collection of transcripts made of Vincent Van Gogh’s correspondence, much of it with his brother Theo. Includes a timeline, broad subject and keyword index.

Whitney ARTPORT
Artport is the Whitney Museum's portal to net art and digital arts, and an online gallery space for commissioned net art projects. The site consists of five major areas: gate pages, commissions, exhibitions, resources, and the collection area.

World Wide Arts Resources
Includes access to artists, museums, galleries and exhibitions, arts publications, and other visual arts information home pages.

World Wide Web Virtual Library: History of Art
This site includes listings of links for specific artists and art movements, as well as association and museum information.  Links to topical guides are also available, such as those for Chinese and Japanese Art History.
