These links provide information, texts, and other internet resources related to the study of film. General Reference

Drew's Script-O-Rama
Sites features scripts (early drafts, shooting scripts, etc.) and transcripts of films and television programs.

CineFiles (from the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archives)
Online database includes "approximately 30,000 reviews, press kits, festival program notes, and other documents from the PFA Library's clippings files." Documents are available in their original context; some files unavailable due to copyright restrictions.
 
DocuSeek
This online search engine for films on DVD and videotape searches the film catalogs of 8 (soon to be 9) documentary film distributors.  The "Advanced Search" option might be useful, to help limit results based on audience age range.
 
Early Cinema
This site "aims to provide an introduction to the first decade of motion pictures and the developments which helped shape cinema as we know it today."  Focuses on information related to cinema pioneers and early film technologies, as well as providing timelines of the period.
 
Film Literature Index
This online searchable index is better than most commercial databases with a focus on film.  Searchers should note that the index covers the years 1976-2001. Use this site to locate citations for articles and search for the journals or books in the library's online catalog.
 
Film Sound Design
Site includes analytical treatment and theoretical considerations related to the production and presentation of sound in film.  A sound design glossary is included, along with sound files available for download.
 
Glossary of Film Terms (production)
Written and designed for the web by Joel Schlemowitz of the New School Film Production Department, this extensive and concise glossary covers production language only. 
 
Internet Movie Database
The IMD is to film topics as Google is to everything else:  this is THE site to go for basic and general information on films, actors, producers, directors, writers, caterers, et al.
 
National Film Preservation Board
Sponsored by the Library of Congress, this organization seeks to preserve classic (Hollywood and American) film and prevent the loss of cinema history due to time and neglect.  The site features a list of current projects, a moving images archive, information about legislation related to film, as well as other film resources.
 
Research Guide in Film Studies: Yale University
Authoritative selection of resources in film studies (including books, journals, and web sources) from the Yale University Library.
 
Silent Era :The Silent Film Website
Loads of information related to silent films and people associated with pre-talking motion pictures. The front page includes lots of current news about upcoming or recent releases.
 
Voice of the Shuttle: Film & Video Links
"VoS is woven by Alan Liu and a development team in the U.California, Santa Barbara, English Department."  The resources listed here cover a fairly broad spectrum of film, cinema history, and production topics.  Searchers should evaluate resources provided on this and similar links listings.

Internet Journals

Bright Lights Film Journal
"Bright Lights Film Journal is a popular-academic hybrid of movie analysis, history, and commentary, looking at classic and commercial, independent, exploitation, and international film from a wide range of vantage points from the aesthetic to the political. A prime area of focus is on the connection between capitalist society and the images that reflect, support, or subvert it — movies as propaganda."  Published quarterly.

Film Philosophy: International Salon-Journal
This site focuses on discussion related to classic and contemporary cinema.  This is less a standard "journal" and more a revised and edited version of discussions taking place on the website's discussion boards.  While it would be challenging to cite the source for its authority, the salon and journal are rewarding for their formalization of this uniquely web-based forum.

Images: A Journal of Popular Culture
This online journal produces thematic content produced my students, scholars, and enthusiasts on a quarterly.  Recent issues have focused on film noir, Italian cinema, and horror films from the 1950s.

Scope:  Institute of Film Studies Journal
Free online journal published by the University of Nottingham's Institute of Film Studies.  To search the journal, you can use the MLA International Bibliography available from the library's "Articles and More" link.

Senses of Cinema
"An online journal devoted to the serious and eclectic discussion of cinema," the site offers extensive and well-documented information on films and filmmakers from around the world.  Note the interview section, the research article section, and the reviews of recent books related to film and film studies.

Strictly Film School: Analysis of Landmark Cinema
"Strictly Film School is a dynamic, evolving personal homage journal dedicated to the analysis of landmark world cinema from an academic perspective: universal themes, symbols and imagery, historic context and artistic genres.  The website contains a collection of short essays featuring the respective filmmaker's notable films. Film criticism, arranged by director or film, are accessible through the directors & films page."  The "Site Info & Articles" link gives a helpful index of new additions.

World Cinema         

Asian Film Connections
"Asian Film Connections seeks to create a deeper awareness and understanding of Asian cinema by providing immediate and comprehensive information about films from Asia, especially the cinemas of China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan."

BiFI
Catalog of the Bibliothèque du Film created collaboratively by the Centre National de al Cinématographie, the Cinémathèque française and FEMIS, the site also includes research guides and articles on a broad range of cinema related topics.

CineGraph
This history of film site focuses on German and European cinema, and includes articles, book reviews and notices, as well as a film glossary in German.

European Films
This site provides news and reviews about recent and upcoming films in Europe. While not scholarly, the site includes reviews, festival notices, and information of interest to avid cinephiles.

Le Film Francais
Site featuring information and articles focusing on contemporary French cinema and the film industry in France.

Film International
This online equivalent of the print journal features both original articles and selections from the print text.  Topics range from film analyses and reviews to research pieces on directors as well as national cinemas.

Films de France
Site offers quick information on French films, actors, directors and more.  As the authority of the site is unknown, researchers should verify information found here with a second source and should disregard the "Essays" section.

German Cinema on DVD and Video
List of links and resources on German cinema from UC Berkeley.

Irish in Film
Online (personal) website and database of films depicting Ireland and the "Irish."  Films are organized by category or may be located via a search function.

KinoEye: New Perspectives on European Film
"Kinoeye aims to explore European film using a number of different writing styles: film reviews, festival overviews, interviews with directors or other industry players, career overviews, analytical articles, reviews of recent VHS/DVD releases, book reviews and book extracts, translated articles from other journals..."  Authors include scholars as well as journalists.

Masters of Cinema
This surprisingly comprehensive and sophisticated site is the product of the collaboration of several former film students still interested in the medium, particularly in relation to world cinema.  The site features articles, a calendar of DVD releases, and reviews of films being released (or re-released).  The site also links to several companion sites focusing on the directors Bresson, Dreyer, Ozu, and Tarkovsky.

Midnight Eye: The Latest and Best in Japanese Cinema
Site includes information new films, re-released classics, and recent books focusing on film in Japan.

ScreenOnline: The Definitive Guide to Britain's Film and TV History
Sponsored by the British Film Institute, this site offers numerous resources related to the history of film and television in the UK.  The video tours and film/television glossary may be particularly helpful to beginning students and are available under the "Education" link.
