History Internet Sources

This is a select list of history-related Internet sites. Suggestions for additions to this list that might be useful for classes at Trinity are welcome and should be sent to Michelle Millet, library liaison for history.

Primary Sources: Electronic Texts and Exhibits

African American Migration Experience
From the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the site is organized around thirteen defining migrations that have formed and transformed African America and the nation. In addition, each migration has a bibliography and a gateway of related Web sites.

American Memory Project
A gateway to over 7 million primary sources in American history, from the Library of Congress.

American Slave Narratives
Transcripts of interviews with former slaves conducted by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the 1930s. From the University of Virginia, contains a helpful bibliography and some audio files as well.

Avalon Project
Documents from law, history, and diplomacy from Yale University Law School.

British History Online
Created by the Institute of Historical Research and the History of Parliament Trust, this is the pilot digital library of British historical sources for historians of Britain located worldwide seeking access to, and cross-searching of, an interconnected range of historical sources.

Irish History Online
An authoritative guide to Irish history from earliest times to the present, established in association with the Royal Historical Society Bibliography of British and Irish History and London's Past Online.

Documenting the American South
Digital archive of primary resources related to southern history and literature. Supported by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University Library.

From Revolution to Reconstruction
An American history digitization project, started in 1994, from the Department of Humanities Computing, University of Groningen, The Netherlands. The site contains a variety of documents from the time of Columbus through the 19th Century.

Internet History Sourcebooks Project
A world wide web project designed to provide easy access to primary sources and other teaching materials in a non-commercial environment. Covers ancient, medieval, and modern history. From Paul Halsell at Fordham University.

Proceedings of the Old Bailey
Digital edition of the Old Bailey, covering criminal trials in London from 1674-1834.

World Wide Web Virtual Library History Index
Links to over 2500 sites in a wide variety of subjects ranging from slavery to individual country sites.

Discussion Networks, Collections, and Organizations

American Historical Association
The major professional association for historians. The website contains information about jobs in history, teaching history (K-12 and at the college level), professional standards, and statistical data about the profession. The AHA is open to historians in all fields.

Benson Latin American Collection
A specialized research library, at the University of Texas-Austin,  focusing on materials from and about Latin America, and on materials relating to Spanish-speaking peoples in the United States. Web site contains lists of finding aids for archival collections, online exhibits, links bibliographies and Internet sites.

France in America: la France en Amérique
Bilingual digital library made available by the Library of Congress.

H-Net Discussion Networks
Discussion networks in the arts, humanities, and social sciences that include book reviews. Hosted by Michigan State University. Many discussion lists in history available.

Institute of Historical Research
The Institute of Historical Research is an important resource for British historians from all over the world. It contains an outstanding open-access library, runs courses and major conferences, offers research fellowships and other awards and produces many significant research aids and tools.

Organization of American Historians
The organization of American Historians is the largest learned society devoted to the study of American history. Founded in 1907 as the Mississippi Valley Historical Association, the OAH has promoted the study and teaching of the American past through its many activities.

Repository of Primary Sources
A listing of over 5,000 websites and their primary source holdings; serves as a directory to archives, special collections and the like.
