Catalog of U.S. Government Publications

Legislative Information

THOMAS  Designed to make federal information searchable online and freely available to the public.

 The United States Code*  The general and permanent law of the United States, searchable online. 

THE SERIAL SET*   A collection of House and Senate reports and documents dating back to1789.  

The Congressional Record  The official record of the proceedings and debates of the United States Congress, published daily when Congress is in session. Full-text online 1994-present. See QUEST for the call number of the print version for older content.

Senate.gov A rich source of Senate legislative information, including a page on Legislation & Records, the current Senate Legislative Calendar & Floor Schedule, Treaties, and Nominations.

House.gov The official page of the U.S. House of Representatives, including floor procedings, schedules, and roll call votes.

The Earmarks Database
"This database provides more information on earmarks in one place than has ever been available through the Federal Government. It is part of an effort to bring greater accountability to federal spending."

Congress Votes
"This site, washingtonpost.com's U.S. Congress Votes Database, is a deep database of every vote in the United States Congress since the 102nd Congress (1991). It lets you browse votes in a variety of ways -- both in aggregate and for individual members of Congress."

Congressional Record  1994-2006. The Daily Digest of the Congressional Record serves as a table of contents for the House and Senate actions reported in the issue and for statements published in the Extensions of Remarks of the Congressional Record. Congressional Research Service (CRS) Reports
While CRS reports are not distributed directly to the public, a number of online resources now exist for obtaining copies of these materials:

OpenCRS
"A project of the Center for Democracy & Technology through the cooperation of several organizations and collectors of CRS Reports, Open CRS provides citizens access to CRS Reports already in the public domain and encourages Congress to provide public access to all CRS Reports."

An online archive containing  72,879 documents related to the study of the Presidency, including elections and poll data, and audio and video clips.

United States Documents Online

The Core Documents of U.S. Democracy
"To provide American citizens direct online access to the basic Federal Government documents that define our democratic society, a core group of current and historical Government publications is being made available for free, permanent, public access via GPO Access. These titles contain information which is vital to the democratic process and critical to an informed electorate. They support the public's right to know about the essential activities of their Government. Immediate, online access to authenticated versions of these Core Documents of Democracy increases in importance as Americans grow ever more dependent on remote electronic access to basic information resources -- both past and present."

The Library of Congress
In addition to the collection of record for the United States, the Library of Congress online hosts a variety of current and historical U.S. government documents, from collections including A Century of Lawmaking and Documents from the Continental Congress and Constitutional Convention.

The Avalon Project
From Yale Law School, full text of a large number of historical U.S. documents from the areas of law, history, and diplomacy, including a number of documents from a wider historical scope that form the backdrop for U.S. democracy. Organized by era, author, title, and subject.

National Archives & Records Administration

The National Security Archive

Declassified Government Documents From UC Berkeley, an "on-line primer to the classification of government materials. Access to electronic records, national archives, presidential libraries, Central and East European archives are all discussed. There are finding aids with accompanying analysis and description as well as close to thirty links to relevant material."

American Fact Finder An interactive feature of the  U.S. Census Bureau website, American Fact Finder lets you build custom data tables of Census data from the 2000 and 1990 short and long forms. Official Documents of the United Nations (ODS) "ODS covers all types of official United Nations documentation, beginning in 1993. Older UN documents are, however, added to the system on a daily basis.
